Chai is the colour of milk tea held against the light — a creamy beige with warmth in it — and on this bag it arrives in two dialects at once. The body is Taurillon Clemence, soft and pebbled; the matte alligator panels are composed of fine, flat scales with a surface like brushed stone. The contrast, up close, is the whole point.
Exotic leather is quieter in person than people expect it to be. Matte alligator does not flash; it absorbs, and it makes the Clemence grain around it look rougher and more casual by comparison. The 18 cm proportions are the familiar ones, with the rolled handle and the lock plate gathering the straps, and the gold hardware warms the beige without over-egging it.
What I carry: phone, cardholder, keys, a lipstick, and nothing scratchy. That last part matters — on a bag with two leathers, abrasive objects and metal zips are the enemy of both.
In the wardrobe it plays the neutral that is festive enough for a wedding and calm enough for a Tuesday, a narrow brief this beige fills easily. In direct sun the matte scales go velvety; indoors they fold invisibly into the Clemence, with only a fine edge giving them away.
Care is where you earn this one. Alligator likes moisture no more than Clemence does, but it objects differently: it lifts and dulls rather than spotting, and cleaning products for pebbled leather have no business near it. Two cloths, two routines, one generous zip pouch for anything sharp. In exchange you carry a beige that nobody else in the room will own.
