Eighteen centimetres of quiet. That is the honest description of this bag, and I mean it as a compliment — black Clemence with silver hardware is the most understated member of the family, the one that lets a grey scarf or a red lip do the talking.
The leather is the star regardless: a deep, pebbled bull calf with a matte face, thick enough to hold its grain through years of use and soft enough that the bag drapes against the hip. The Picotin 18 format is unchanged — one rolled handle, a rounded soft base, and the two top straps drawn through the little lock plate where they meet.
It is my default bag for anything with an agenda: gallery openings, lunches, meetings where a bright bag would be a distraction. Phone, cardholder, keys, a lipstick, and a pair of glasses folded flat; the black absorbs all of it invisibly, which is convenient right up until you need to find one small thing in a hurry.
Styling: silver jewellery, grey knitwear, white trainers, denim — the metal makes the whole thing look edited rather than plain. It is also the one bag I never reconsider on the way out the door.
So the honest amendment: silver trims help, because the metal pulls the eye, but the interior of a black bag is still a place keys go to hide. Keep small items in one bright pouch, brush the surface before you leave the house, and the stealthiest colorway in the collection will serve you for a decade.
